Aunt Arrested After Violently Shaking Infant Niece

DEER PARK, N.Y. (WPIX) - A Deer Park woman is in police custody for critically injuring her 11-month-old niece by shaking her in order to stop the infant from crying.

According to Suffolk County police, 22-year-old Paola Baez and her husband Jose initially told the hospital staff at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip that the baby had fallen out of a child's swing.

Officials said the child was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state and had sustained suspicious injuries.

Upon investigation, detectives determined Baez, who was watching the child while her mother was at work, had shaken her niece around 9 a.m. Wednesday inside her home on Morris Drive in order to stop the baby from crying.

Baez and her husband took the child to the hospital after she became unresponsive and had bloody bubbles form near her mouth, police said.

Doctors said the baby suffered subdural intracranial and retinal hemorrhaging and is currently in critical condition.

Baez has been charged with Reckless Assault of a Child. She was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
