A new burger joint in Waco has become the talk of the town. But the chatter isn't about the beef, but the restaurant's name.
"i was just wondering is this the famous place we can get burgers at," asks one hungry customer.
Whether it's for the name or for the food, cash is flowing at Fat Ho Burgers near downtown Waco, even though the restaurant has only been open since Tuesday.
It's a family business started by 23-year-old Lakita Evans. She describes her business plan
"My burgers, they're cheap. They don't go over 6 bucks because I thought, you know, I grew up in poverty," Evans explains.
Evans was born in Marlin and grew up in Waco with five siblings and a single mother. Now they are all working for her.
Evans is the only one in the family to graduate from college. She made some sacrifices to get Fat Ho Burgers up and running.
"I had to sell my car, my tires, my TV, my laptop, my computer. I had to sell all this to get this up," says Evans.
The young business owner named her restaurant after a joke. However, some critics in town don't think it's funny, but rather offensive. She doesn't really care.
So, would Evans ever change the name?
" Yeah, if they pay me what Donald Trump got, I will!" she responds good-humoredly.
It may be a name that's cooking up controversy, but it's also providing a family with a second chance.
I think the name is shameful, but it looks like it was a marketing blitz for the owner, so whatever.
She did that!

They should be thankful their not called Fat Azz Ho Burgers.
ReplyDeleteShe might not care about what her critics say but if the folks dont come & buy she will put a great amount of concern in how they feel.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if she had reference to herself when she came up w/ the name.
She is a college grad and that's the best name that she could think of....I guess
ReplyDeleteHo Burger Sound more like the five year old of today's letter only twenty years into her future.
ReplyDeleteDid anybody notice the sign is a banner that can be taken down anytime. I think this is a business move to get some press and then it will be changed. If the sign had a hard back to it, I would believe she was serious. This is being used to get her burger shop some shine and obviously it worked, shit I would rather see this than some dipshits beating somebody up in a burger shop or cursing someone out over food!! Good for her!!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking she could have come up with a better name, but I'm glad for her success so far and I hope her success continues. It seems she would be willing to change the name in the future if it came down to it. I'm happy she graduated college. I'm just happy for her all around! I mean, it's ignorant (the name) but she's trying!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah they will do well cuz Waco got plenty of Fat Ho's that are wide open there...
