The suspect, Damian McElrath (pictured), is charged with the aggravated assault and murder of his adopted mother Diane McElrath, 58, who was fatally stabbed at her home Monday afternoon.
Damian called 911 and was waiting when police arrived. He was taken into custody without incident, police said. Diane adopted Damian 16 years ago when he was a toddler and has had a history of trouble with him, said Gwendolyn Williams, who described Diane as her best friend.
“He has threatened her time and time again, told her he was going to kill her,” Gwendolyn said. “I’ve asked her, I have begged her and I have talked with her—even last night we talked, and she said she couldn’t turn her back on him because she raised him.”
Diane has another son who arrived to find police cars at the home on Monday, family members said.
Police have responded to other calls to the McElrath home, but officers would not go into detail of the nature of the calls.
“She loved him. She loved him,” Gwendolyn said in regards to Diane’s feelings toward Damian. “She loved him to the bitter end.

She gave that boy a home when his own parents didn't want him! He looks like a demon seed! Stuff like this will really make you think twice about adopting these crack babies, I mean children, that are clearly already too messed up to do anything with...no matter how hard you try! Unfortunately they have been destroyed by their own family, the very ones who were supposed to love and protect them! #DamnShame It's sad too because there are many children in the system deserving of a good home that may not get one because: Who wants to even take a chance anymore? SMH :-((
