Now the victims' family is speaking out. The shooting happened early Sunday morning in the Pleasure Ridge Park area. Police are trying to sort through exactly what happened.
The man who was shot has made it through surgery, but it's unclear if he's a victim or a suspect.
The sister and aunt of the victims are in shock, mourning three loved ones. "She loved kids, she loved life, she was my only sister," said Omega Goldsmith, the sister of the woman killed.
Police found 26-year-old Sade Goldsmith and her two sons, 6-year-old John Devine Jr., and 5-year-old John Tee Devine, all shot to death in their home on Maravian Drive.
Officers first responded there after a panic alarm went off at the house just before 6 a.m. "Upon their arrival, they located a door that had been broken into in the rear," said Louisville Metro Police Lt. Barry Wilkerson.
Besides the three dead, police also found the boys' father wounded but alive. Goldsmith's sister said the two had an on-and-off relationship for years that included a history of domestic violence. She also said that man didn't live with her sister, and isn't sure why he was at her home.
"My mother had concerns and acted on her concerns, doing what she could as a mother to protect her child and her grandchildren," said Goldsmith.
"There had been some prior issues domestically which, obviously, we're looking into," said Wilkerson. "And that's, again, a situation where we need to speak to that individual and give him an opportunity to possibly tell us what occurred."
Police are hesitant to discuss a motive at this time, and won't confirm whether these killings came before an attempted suicide. But investigators said the public is safe. "I think she did the best she could to protect herself, protect her boys," said Goldsmith.
Goldsmith and her boys had just moved into the PRP subdivision a few weeks ago. The family said it was supposed to be a new start.
"They loved their mama. She loved her boys, and this should make parents hug their children every night," said Goldsmith.
Test for gun powder on his hand & that would give a good indication of whodidit.

The quality of some men has really went to crap. Some have no idea what it takes to be a man, or what the position of man entails. Some chose the twerking underage Facebook sleaze bag and when they have a decent GOD fearing woman they have no idea how to treat her. They walk around with the mindset of 20 women to 1 man and treat their partners as if SHE should be GRATEFUL that he gives her the time of day. And when they know their worth, won't accept being cheated on or disrespected, or refuse to not only be mom, homemaker, and breadwinner and remove themselves from a dysfunctional relationship ...this is what some of the so called STUD/MEN do. And the poor innocent children don't ever have a fighting chance. GOD REST THE SOUL OF THE MOTHER AND HER BABIES. INVESTIGATORS DO YOUR JOB IN A HASTE AND GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS TERRIBLE INCIDENT.
