Murder of cross-dressing Baltimore teen has community fearing motive was homophobia

A gay Baltimore teen’s shooting has shaken a community and encouraged local leaders to advocate confronting homophobia in the black community while police search for the as-yet-unidentified gunman.

Openly gay, black 18-year-old Desean Bowman was slain by another black man at an East Baltimore gas station early in June, when the teen was dressed in women’s clothing.

Baltimore Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Daily News that while the identity of the gunman remains in question, officials are making “positive progress.”

The gunman shot Bowman for what witnesses say appeared to be “no apparent reason,” according to WBAL-TV11. The man was not looking for cash, which has prompted many close to the victim to speculate that homophobia motivated the killing.

Guglielmi said recent search and seizure warrants on a number of cell phones have resulted in several witnesses cooperating with the investigation.

“What was the point of shooting him? He didn't do anything to him. To just take a gun out and shoot someone like that, I don't understand,” Etta McClurkin, the victim’s aunt, told the television station.

At Baltimore’s City Hall on Tuesday, the Guardian Angels, a volunteer group of unarmed citizen crime patrollers, held a vigil for Bowman and other gay, lesbian and transgender victims of crime.

“It's so ironic because African-Americans, we were slaves not too long ago,” Victoria Kent, one of the Guardian Angels present, told the station. “We were a victim of this prejudice, and we still are today. So, to be a victim and to victimize another group of people is ridiculous.”

Guglielmi said it is unclear at this time if the killing will be classified as a hate crime.

“There was no visible evidence on the scene, no foul language, no threats, no swastikas. However, once we identify a suspect ... we can explore a hate crime investigation.”

Bowman’s friends and family were struck by the incident. According to friends, the young man was popular, funny, and compassionate.

“He was just an all-around genuine person,” one of Bowman’s friends, who did not want to be identified, told the station. “He always made you laugh or smile, and he always had something funny to say. If you were having a bad day, he would make you feel better.”

Bowman’s father, Donnie, told the station he “can’t sleep” until the person who killed his son is found.

Those with any information related the incident should contact the Baltimore City police homicide unit.

  2. It was wrong of the killer to take this mans life. I don't agree with homosexuality either but no one has a right to take someones life. Also, I wish people would stop comparing slavery to homosexuality. Slaves had no choice in the matter. People didn't choose to be slaves. People do however, choose to be gay.

  3. I stopped reading the article when the lady started saying black people were slaves not too long ago. I get SOOOOOO SICK of mf's comparing the gay/lesbian struggle to the civil rights struggle! You haven't seen any gays ripped apart by police dogs, sprayed with fire hoses, or even refused service because they're gay. Stop with the bs. It's like you can't have an opinion about the gay lifestyle without someone crying foul. I'm sorry the kid died for no reason, but when in Rome do as the Romans do. Don't go around as a man dressed as a woman when you know its not accepted at all where you live. I'm not homophobic and I'm not decriminatory towards gays, but damn quit throwing it in our faces (some of them) and I'll quit speaking on it. Shit gets on my nerves. Before long, we'll be discrimanated as straight people by the gays. Damn...

  5. Since America is free, I don't think anyone should be forced or pressured to "accept" homosexuality... If I believe the Lord's word and believe that it is wrong, that is just as much my right as it is for someone to be gay. I don't have to "accept" or agree with anything....BUT to condemn or strike down another person just because you don't like what they do, or because they make you feel uncomfortable is just as wrong in my eyes. Jesus' teaches us not to judge, but to help. I'd want someone to help me as opposed to judging me if I were lost, or strayed from the path I believe Jesus would want us to follow.

  6. GOD IS THE ULTIMATE JUDGE , NOT PEOPLE. THE KILLER NEEDS TO BE FOUND AND HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

  7. How do we KNOW that people CHOOSE to be GAY,

And if you believe in the Lord's word NO ONE SIN is GREATER than the NEXT

I fell sorry for the gay people becasue we are taught to be ourselves, but the moment one steps out of the box, they are put down, made to feel ashamed of who they are, so they can never truly be themselves, becasue it's always some idot there wating and willing to tear them down

  9. I agree with the last two comments and some in between. You all are such hypocrites and always point the finger to remove the blame from yourseles. No one CHOOSES to be gay. If the gay community had a choice in the matter why would they be something that people don't like? They ACCEPTED who they are. Why can't the rest of the world? This IS compared to SLAVERY because the acts are being treated the same, just in a different manner.

  10. Wow. I'm shocked at some comments. No one has clean hands to be saying if he's gay that's his problem. Everyone that has said he chose to be gay has no idea what it is like. I'm not gay but I don't hate them either. Their life like everyone else's is God's business not ours. Stop pointing fingers and trying to say what God would say because no one knows!! At the end of the day a life was taken. Period. We are all renting these bodies until God calls us home. Get your life together and stop worrying about where his soul is going and worry about where yours is going since you're judging!!
