Unfortunately, Whitney Houston's star power and die-hard fans didn't show up and show out at the theaters over the weekend to support her new/last flick. In a surprising turn of events, Sparkle opened with a measley $12 million dollars in ticket sales - a fifth place box office placing which we all know will certainly send it spiraling toward #9 or #10 next weekend.
This is a sad sentiment, but I think the problem here is that people are tired of giving singers who can't really act (Cee-lo, Whitney, Jordin) their hard earned dollars - even when it's Whitney Houston.
I hate to say it, but I didn't go to the theater either... but I will most certainly buy it on DVD just because I want to have it, so I didn't see the need to spend $30 to support when my $15 on the DVD will replinish their pockets.
I know it helps keep black flicks in the theaters to show up the first week, but I'm sick of theaters giving us rappers and singers who can't act in a musical, or rappers and singers who can't act in a comedy.
Some of us like drama, action, or suspense. Why not a black Jason Bourne of The Bourne Identity fame, type film?
Hopefully people will get ticked off by this and hit the theater this week.

Unfortunately, I spent my hard earned dollars on my Direct TV bill so I could watch the original Sparkle with Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Phillip Michael Thomas on Centric. When I heard they were remaking this movie with Aaliyah years ago, I decided I would NOT be in attendance. I did the choreography in my living room with Sista and the Sistas this weekend.

There is a movie theater not far from me that intentionally print tickets for white movies when u specifically ask for a black movie. I believe a lot of theaters do this too. I wanted tix for Sparkle they printed tix for Expendables 2. Others patrons were complaining too.
ReplyDeleteJust not a movie goer.
ReplyDeleteI'll wait for the DVD. The original Sparkle is the classic I all grew up with (and who don't know all the lines, songs and choreograpy from dancing and singing along with your sisters, girlfriends and cousins) to the VHS/DVD. Lol. I'd just be sitting in the audience comparing it to the original.
ReplyDeleteThe movie is actually good...DUMMIES!
