Marlon Wayans Thinks Spike Lee Should Take Some Tyler Perry Classes

I say it all the time, Tyler Perry isn't very innovative and his movies and TV shows have been recycled over and over and over, but what he's done as a businessman is nothing short of phenomenal.

While some Black filmmakers have nothing but criticism for Tyler Perry and his movies, Marlon Wayans gives the Madea creator props.

"That man works his a$$ off. Never mind what people want to say about his creativity, his business-sense is immaculate and people need to look at that," Marlon told Power 105.1 radio station.

Marlon and his equally famous brothers have an entertainment empire of their own, but the A Haunted House star admitted that he and his siblings could learn a few things from Tyler whose critics have taken issue with his somewhat stereotypical depictions of Black life.

"If you look at his business, he's a trailblazer. You gotta give it up," said Marlon who seems to disagree with one of Tyler's most vocal critics, filmmaker Spike Lee. "I love you Spike, but just watch what this boy is doing."

It’s been quite some time since comedian Marlon starred on the big screen. His new comedy A Haunted House recently hit theaters and he told UrbanDaily.com that the film is unlike the other “bullsh*t” parodies in the last decade.

“I don’t think [other filmmakers] know how to do it, what they do is just a bunch of sketches. You got to make a movie, and when you make a movie, there has to be a story,” said the youngest Wayans.

Marlon is confident that the horror-comedy will be at the level of Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2, which he and his brother Shawn Wayans produced. The actor explained that he was forced out of the franchise and took it upon himself to create the new project.

“We did Scary Movie one and two,” said Marlon who refers to those two as "the funny ones."
After producing those to blockbuster hits, the studio took over. “They went and did three and four, and then five; I mean they got Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, and Heather Locklear. It looked like an episode of ‘Celebrity Rehab,'” Marlon told Wendy Williams.

  1. All right now Marlon who made movies first spike or Tyler? I give Tyler his props but spike is an icon a phenomenal producer. He has brought us memorial movies that we will watch over and over movies our grand kids will be watching so to say that spike can learn from Tyler it's a big understatement and a slap in the face.

Sorry, but, in my opinion, Spike Lee used stereotypical situations and characters in his movies as well, so really, who is HE to call what TP is doing "Buffoonery."? At the end of the day, Spike's characters and plots were meant to tell a story; to bring home a point. Well, I'm quite sure TP feels the same way about his plots and characters. Radio Raheem was stereotypical. In School Daze, Spike used the light-skinned versus dark skinned situation to try to "wake-up!" the nation. In "Jungle Fever" the Black man cheated on his beautiful, Black wife for a White lady. Not to mention, the crack head, Gator and his girlfriend played by Halle Berry. WHY did there have to be a crack head in the story? WHY did the crack head have to be Black? I could go on and on with the Spike Lee movies.

The point I'm trying to make is, when you strip Spike's movies down, there aren't many differences in the ROUTE he tried to take and the route TP takes in order to tell a story. And, yes, Spike CAN learn from TP and vice versa. When you close your mind and feel you're above someone who comes after you teaching you some new tricks, then you stunt your own growth. I am not saying that TP's movies and characters are the beginning and the ending because I have grown tired of the same stuff over and over. But, I AM saying that Spike Lee needs to get off his high horse and stop criticizing. Hale, REACH out to TP. Join forces. Stop trying to tear each other down. It's ugly and STEREOTYPICAL.

    1. You are so right in your comments. I believe Spike is jealous beause he hasn't been relevent in awhile. He was never on Tyler's level anyway. Tyler has built a large following and he has a business empire. Spike needs to learn from Tyler. As a business person I wish I could learn a few nthings from Tyler.

  3. I couldn't agree more @Women's. the movies Spike created himself are very stereo typical only the one's he directed had more substance. The humbling part is Tyler said he wouldn't have minded Spike teaching him a thing or two but in my opinion Spike spoke out of jealousy. TP had a cult following its hard for any critic to ignore that.

Thanks you, Anon! I was going to say the same thing; it appears that Spike is jealous or "hating" but I didn't want people to attack me for using the term "hating." But, I'm sorry, in this instance, it seems that's what it is. . .HATING!

And, you're quite observant and correct; the "Spike Lee" movies that had the most substance are the ones he DIRECTED.

Yes, I remember TP saying that he wouldn't have minded if SL would have reached out to him an offerred to teach him a thing or two and I'm quite sure he meant it. I guess SL never got that memo. IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

Just because Spike was first doesn't give him the right to tear someone else down. It's just like the Mariah Carey and NM thing on American Idol. People felt NM was disrespectful becaise MC is an icon. But, no one spoke about the disrespect that MC showed towards NM. So, NM was supposed to take MC talking down to her and never say a word to her because MC is an icon? I'm sorry, but being mean and disrespectful just for the sake of being mean and disrespectful totally wipes out that icon shyt. And, that goes for Spike Lee, too!

    1. Calm down for starters. If MC puts herself in a situation that requires her to get told off then she gets it.
Icon or not if she can talk reckless she can get reckless back don't think you can give it out but you can't get it. Okay I respect you as an icon , but soon as your mouth get to slck wiith me that icon goes out the window and you get downgraded to everyday chick

Toya, let's say you have a co-worker (because, that's what MC and NM are at this poing; co-workers),and she KEPT talking down to you. When it's time for YOU to speak and give your opinion, she butts in and says stuff like, "I have this and that degree and you don't so I can speak and you can't," or, at least insinuate that in her speach, would you, at some point, speak up on the disrespect or would you continue to take it because you feel she's been here the longest, she has all these degrees so she's earned the right to treat people as if they're beneath her?

All the money in the world, all the awards in the world, all the degrees in the world don't give you an excuse to mistreat people.

  5. I'm sorry but what is so innovative about gaining riches with cheap comedy? Everyone knows that art based films (ex. The Caveman's Valentine) don't make a lot of money...RARELY do you find creative and commercial successes such as Pulp Fiction. Cheap laughs pay like a mug. Appealing to your audience while wearing a dress is a no brainer...hence, copy cats.
