The gun in the photo is a 30-06 or a thirty ought six. It's a hunting rifle. One I use for deer and bear.
Recommending a gun I will say any weapon you feel comfortable shooting. I would suggest a revolver. I sometimes carry a Ruger LCR .38 in a ankle holster as a backup weapon or in IWB. In the waist ban.
Now if you are afraid of either of these try purchasing a CO2 pistol. As a confidence builder. My only reason I will not suggest a semi-auto pistol is there are to many moving parts.
To many things can go wrong in a high threat situation. A revolver just point and pull the trigger.
